Artist’s Statement:
I have set myself the challenge to create a poster for each month of 2021 to document the year. Like January’s poster, which can be seen on my Instagram account, February’s is also titled ‘Waiting’ as we continue to wait for things to get better. The design is influenced by David Carson, an American Graphic Designer, who incorporates collage and layering in his own unique style.
The background, showing a rain spattered window, reflects the weather this month. I created it by inking up a smooth piece of lino with Caligo Safe Wash Ink and printed it with dripping wet paper which produced lovely, unplanned textures due to the water based nature of the ink.
The design includes other layered elements which sum up the month to me; a lino printed repeat symbol and timer, a line graph (thankfully showing a steep decline in cases) and lino printed homes to represent the ‘stay at home’ message. The raindrops are hand painted.
Hopefully my March poster will be a little more cheerful with some lovely springtime yellows creeping in.
