Sustainable Printmaking: From Studio to Home – A Five-Day Intensive with Viola Wang – 17-21 August – 10am to 3pm

August 17 @ 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM BST
£375.00

Unlock the world of printmaking through non-toxic, sustainable, and accessible methods. This five-day summer intensive reimagines traditional techniques for the modern artist.

Both fun and challenging, this course is designed to shift your perspective; you’ll gain fundamental technical knowledge while being encouraged to ‘think outside the box’ to develop your own visual language. From the professional studio to your kitchen table, you will learn to create high-quality artist prints without harsh chemicals.

What You Will Explore

We will build your knowledge step-by-step, covering four core pillars of printmaking:

  • Monotype: Capturing painterly marks and unique, one-off expressions. (Day 1)
  • Relief Printing: From cutting into surfaces to construct plates, also experiment with alternative surfaces. (Day 2)
  • Intaglio Techniques: From dry point to carborundum, exploring fine lines and textures through non-toxic etching alternatives. (Day 3)
  • Lithography: Mastering the “planographic” process using the materials from your kitchen. (Day 4)
  • Combining: To combine one or two printmaking techniques in a small edition of art prints. (Day 5)

The ‘No-Press’ Revolution

A key focus of this course is portability. While we will utilize a professional printing press, we will also master alternative hand-printing techniques. You will leave the course with the skills and confidence to continue your creative practice at home using minimal, eco-friendly equipment.

However having gained the experience of working at the Ochre Print Studio there is also the knowledge that further exploration and consolidation could be supported by the Studio. Further information will be given about membership of the Studio and benefits, including Open Access days

Who Is This for?

  • Beginners and Hobbyists: No prior experience is needed. We start with the basics.
  • Experienced Printmakers: Perfect for those looking to transition to non-toxic methods or expand their technical repertoire.
  • Educators: This course is highly recommended for CPD (Staff Development), providing teachers with safe, budget-friendly techniques to bring back to the classroom.
