Tutor: Ciara Healy.
(Scroll down for images)

Learn a range of different simple book making skills. Apply these skills to your creative style and develop your own artists’ books!

What previous knowledge/experience/skills is required?

Anyone who is willing to experiment and explore visual arts materials, images and expression. No direct previous experience is required but interest and openness to artist book making is desirable. This is not a traditional bookbinders course; it is a more creative version!  You will not need to use advanced bookbinder materials, the books you will learn to make can also be made at home. There is some delicate stitching required, so a steady hand would be useful. If you are a poet, writer, painter, photographer, printmaker or textile artist this is a good course for you!

Course Content:

During the course you will learn to make:

A Tunnel Book

An Accordion Book

A Flutter Book

A Soft and Hardbound Japanese Stab bound book / Photo album.

A Case Bound Note book.

A French Stitched Book.

An Octagon Book.

A Portfolio Box for Storing all of your handmade books!

Aims:

To enable and promote confidence in image making and visual expression.

To promote confidence in the use of different binding techniques and materials.

To encourage where appropriate the development of individual subject matter.

Learn core bookbinding skills.

What materials you will need

You will need to bring some of your own basic materials such as a good sharp kraft knife, pencils, paint, brushes, and paper (lots of different colours and sizes). You will also need to bring some decorative items such as ribbon and fancy (wrapping) papers or wall paper, fabric and basically any other similar bits you might collect around the home. These can be used for book covers or for the pages of your book.  (You can be adventurous and bring things like jcloths, tissue, dried tea bags etc!)

I will provide cut pieces of and millboard (for making hard bound covers) a bone folder, book binders needles, book cloth and a book press.

What you should be able to do by the end of the course:

  1. Create a number of different types of books.
  2. Adopt and adapt these skills into your own personal artist book making style.
  3. Discuss, appreciate and learn from your own and each others’ work.
